The market is full of people who can get an impressive demo out of a model and nobody who can tell you whether it got worse last Tuesday. We test the second thing, because that is what costs money in production.
Brief us Monday; we aim to send the write-ups by Friday. Search, interviews and a shortlist you decline cost nothing.
The candidate is given a retrieval pipeline that answers correctly about 70% of the time and asked to make it better, with no eval set. The real test is whether they build one before they start changing prompts. We also watch how they use their own AI tooling during the session, because that is now part of the job.
A syntax quiz proves nothing. These are the mistakes that decide a no, and they only surface once the work stops being tidy.
Tools change. Judgment travels. We still test in the stack your team runs, including the paths where it breaks.
An embedded engineer sits in your standup, your repo and your Slack from day one. We never leave the loop: the founder who vetted them still reads their code weekly or every two weeks, then sends that read in writing.
One hourly rate in USD covers their pay, our fee, the vetting, contracts and invoicing. The band comes from what they did in the pairing session, not the title on their CV.

Planning range, not a quote. Pairing performance, stack, overlap, engagement length and start date set the final rate.
Every shortlisted candidate arrives with what we saw, where they were strong and what they got wrong. Read one before you decide whether this process is any different.
Read the sample vetting write-upTell us the stack, the scope and the seniority. On the call you get a straight answer on whether we can fill it and what it would cost. If we take it on, a founder pairs with each candidate and you get one to three names with the write-ups attached. If nobody clears the bar, we say so instead of padding the list.
